Club de Alegría y Amistad

Every Wednesday members of the Club of Happiness and Friendship meet to play memory games, stretch, do small exercises and, of course, to laugh. The group was formed by Juliana Vega Cajas as a way to build a community and support network for elderly people living in San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima’s most populated and arguably most impoverished neighborhood. Some days they pull their resources together–they may each bring a piece of fruit or the equivalent of .40 cents–to make a nutritious meal. I was very moved by their generosity…they instantly welcomed me and for about two hours, pure laughter and joy was shared between them. They were definitely one of the most jovial groups I have photographed and their happiness was contagious. At the end of the meeting, all 20+ people shared hugs and it felt good to be a part of that. I left convinced that laughter is definitely life’s best medicine!
