The Stations of the Cross

The past few days in Lima have been incredibly exciting as this is my first time to photograph not only Holy Week but Holy Week in a devoutly religious country. Thousands gather in Lima to visit churches, take part in or watch various processions and ceremonies, give offerings, spend time with family, make pilgrimages to San Cristobal hill or to simply observe the energy entangling this bustling, gloriously colorful city. Yesterday, I spent most of my day patiently waiting for Peruvian actor Mario Valencia to make his annual trek up San Cristobal hill with a huge, wooden cross towering above him, held by the strength of his arms. Valencia, who plays the role of Jesus, has enacted the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week for the past 33 years! Not only is Valencia’s willpower admirable but also the amount of people who flock to the top of San Cristobal to give support and praise. It was a truly awe-inspiring day.
