¡Cuarenta Veces “No”!

Today was the first exciting event to photograph in Lima since arriving about a week ago. When I heard about the upcoming mayoral recall election and how controversial/divided/passionate people in Lima were about it, I knew that today would be a good day. As I understand it, the current mayor, Mayor Susana Villarán, found her position being challenged after opponents gathered up signatures–some forged and repeated but never the less accepted–in favor of a recall. Today, more than 6 million Limeños headed to the polls to vote either for or against Villarán and all current city council members. Though the votes are still being counted and no official result has been announced, there was a huge crowd of Villarán supporters that gathered beneath the Gran Hotel Bolivar where Villarán later appeared to speak. The feeling was one of celebration as exit polls show that “¡Susana ya ganó!”
